Most ‘Yesenaren’ have a straightforward mentality. The atmosphere in Yerseke is friendly and jovial. Mostly undamaged by the immense 1953 flood, the village today is fully dependent on aquaculture and tourism.
The historical village harbour still has traditional oyster pits, making Yerseke a big little epicentre of global mussel and oyster trade. The Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier, the icon of the Delta Works between the islands Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland, is protecting the estuary against storms. A must see.
