On Texel, the biggest of the West Frisian Isles, about 13.700 people, 16.000 sheep and 336 bird species coexist on 463,3 km². The isle is located between the North Sea and the Wadden Sea, about 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of Amsterdam.
The Royal NIOZ is located east of the TESO ferry harbour in the village ‘t Horntje, right in front of the Marsdiep. This deep tide-race is a portal to the Wadden Sea and the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats in the world.
