This is your chance: the Royal NIOZ Department of Estuarine and Delta Systems (EDS) is looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work on projecting global and regional sea-level change.

THE PROJECT
This project is part of the European Commission funded Horizon 2020 PROTECT consortium: “PROjecTing sEa-level rise: from iCe sheets to local implicaTions”. This €10 million project, which runs from September 2020 to August 2024, will provide improved projections of the land ice contribution to sea-level rise in this century and beyond.

Your task will be to, together with our partners and stakeholders, develop state-of-the-art projections of global mean and regional sea-level change up to 2500 based on a range of climate scenarios. You will do this based on probability distributions of land ice mass change from ice sheet and glacier simulations and evaluations with observations from other work packages in the consortium, combined with steric and non-cryospheric mass contributions to sea-level change. Using different uncertainty frameworks (scenarios, probabilistic, extra-probabilistic, combining different model settings and expert knowledge), the sea-level scenarios will provide both ‘best ’ and ‘high-end’ estimates. The required type of projection and uncertainty framework will be solicited from the stakeholders. You are expected to lead and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and written reports, as well as present the project results on (inter)national conferences. You will also work closely together with BRGM (France) to develop an online tool to disseminate the sea-level projections to the wider public.

The work will be carried out from your base at NIOZ Yerseke (NL), in direct collaboration with our partners at Kings College in London (UK), Utrecht University (NL) and BRGM (France). Furthermore, you will be expected to join the yearly progress meetings, where all 26 partners and 8 work packages of PROTECT will come together. THE CANDIDATE
We are looking for a candidate who has, or is close to obtaining, a PhD degree in Climate Physics or Geosciences. We expect you to have demonstrated experience with numerical models, scientific programming and the analysis of large and complex datasets. You are capable of planning and organizing your own work independently, and meet deadlines imposed by the project.

You are open and communicative, and keen on interacting with project partners and working as part of an international team. Excellent communication skills and good English oral and writing skills are required, as you are expected to publish your findings in scientific journals, present at international conferences and effectively communicate your results to users.

You have a keen interest in climate change related topics, preferably in the field of sea-level change, oceanography or glaciology, and are also interested to share your knowledge outside academia.

CONDITIONS
Employment of this position at Royal NIOZ is by NWO (The Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research). We offer a position for a period of approximately 3.5 years (fulltime). The salary is compliant to the CAO-OI (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Research Institutes), a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus of 8,3% of the gross annual salary, flexible work arrangements and 42 days of holiday leave (fulltime position).

You may expect attractive secondary employment conditions. We offer generous relocation expenses for employees coming from abroad and support with finding accommodation.

Your employment contract with Royal NIOZ is an NWO-I (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) employment contract. We offer you a temporary employment contract for a period of 2 years. We offer a salary that complies with the collective agreement (CAO) for Dutch research institutions, with a maximum of scale 10 or 11 , depending on your education and experience.

The position will be based at the NIOZ-Yerseke, which is at commuting distance of cities like Antwerpen, Breda, Middelburg and Vlissingen.
