The department of Ocean Systems aims to investigate open-ocean processes ranging from physical oceanography at multiple scales to chemical oceanography, and deep-sea ecology to paleoceanography and paleoclimatology.
For this research, we actively collaborate with peers in (inter)national partner institutes, including the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU) and the Faculty of Earth Sciences of Utrecht University, as well as e.g., MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences in Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany.
The department of Ocean Systems (Texel, the Netherlands) is a leading research partner in the recently funded NWO-project PASODOBLE and will host the project.
THE RESEARCH PROJECT
The relation between the process of calcification and sea water saturation / pCO2 is poorly understood. The overall objective of this project is to unravel the mechanisms underlying foraminiferal biomineralization and specifically, their relation to seawater inorganic carbon chemistry. To do this, our research approach involves a suite of experimental techniques to investigate subcellular processes during the formation of new calcium carbonate by these organisms.
We are looking for highly motivated individuals with excellent practical, technical and cognitive abilities. Applicants must hold an MSc degree and must have a background in (bio)geosciences, marine sciences or environmental sciences. Good English oral and writing skills are essential.
As our PhD colleague, you will focus on incubating foraminiferal specimens with fluorescent dyes and subsequent visualization of subcellular processes using confocal microscopy. In addition, ion fluxes during calcification will be determined using microelectrodes. Together, these results will form the basis of a new biomineralization model for foraminifera.
The model you will co-develop should clarify proxy-relationships employed in paleoceanographic reconstructions. For this reason, we especially like to get into contact with applicants that have gained experience in working with (geo)chemical techniques.
The project will be hosted by the department of Ocean Systems (OCS) at the Royal NIOZ on Texel. Candidates must be available to start work at the 1st of May, 2017.
We offer you a fulltime position for 4 years, a pension scheme, a yearly 8% vacation allowance, year-end bonus and flexible employment conditions.
