Researchers at the Department of Ocean Systems aim to investigate open-ocean processes ranging from basin-wide physical oceanography to small-scale chemical oceanography, and from deep-sea ecology to paleoceanography and -climatology. Understanding climate change, climate sensitivity, and climate forcing are among the focal points within OCS.
OCS operates high-resolution and high-tech analytical equipment for stable isotopes, foraminiferal geochemistry and sedimentary trace metals. Past ocean-climate interactions are investigated in a multidisciplinary context and close cooperation with our physical and chemical oceanographers.
The current focus is on the development of novel proxies for past salinity, temperature and inorganic carbon chemistry, the role of dust as a recorder and player in past climate change and Quaternary climate change in general and high-resolution records in particular.
In our research we actively collaborate with peers in (inter)national partner institutes, including the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU) and the Faculty of Earth Sciences of Utrecht University, as well as e.g., MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences in Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Paleoceanographer with experience in time series of past changes in the marine environment. Research topics could include, but are not limited to, glacial-interglacial variability, sub-Milankovitch variability, quantitative climate reconstructions, past nutrient cycling, climate sensitivity, and proxy development.
The candidate should have an affinity with state-of-the-art analytical techniques such as XRF core scanning, Multi Collector ICP-MS and/or laser ablation ICP-MS.
You are expected to acquire research grants and to participate in (or lead) oceanographic research cruises that involve the Royal NIOZ research vessel R/V Pelagia. You are expected to work closely together with the other members of the OCS department and contribute your knowledge in multidisciplinary projects together with other researchers at the Royal NIOZ. Moreover, the interdisciplinary and international research environment at the Royal NIOZ suits you well. You have a strong command of the English language in speaking and writing.
Employment of this position at Royal NIOZ is by NWO (The Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research). In case the position is offered at the tenure-track level, the candidate will be hired for 5 years. At the end of a successful tenure-track term, a permanent scientific staff position will be offered up to the level of senior scientist. Criteria for evaluation comprise a track record of publications that is far above average, proven skills in acquiring funding, and an international network. The position comes with the opportunity to set-up a PhD project in the same direction as the (tenure-track) position.
